Cow's milk is allergy is one of the most common food allergies in children. Some children who are allergic to cow's milk are allergic to soy milk, too. Immediate signs and symptoms of milk allergy range from mild to severe and can include wheezing, vomiting, hives. Signs &symptoms that take time to develop include loose stools, which may contain blood, diarrhea, colics, runny nose &watery eyes, itchy skin rash, often around the mouth.
Luckily, most children outgrow a milk allergy by age 3.
The diagnosis is based on history, physical exam, & a these tests:
1. Blood test that can measure the immune system's response to milk by measuring the amount of certain antibodies, known as immunoglobulin E (IgE). This test isn't always accurate and some milk allergies are not mediated by IgE.
2. Stool test to check for the presence of white blood cells in the stools, which signifies inflammation of the intestines
3. allergy skin test, in which a small amount of the milk protein in inserted just under the surface of the child's skin with a needle. If a raised spot called a wheal emerges, the child may have a milk allergy.
Solutions:
1.Breast-feeding is the best source of nutrition for your child, but you have to stop consuming dairy products because milk proteins will be transferred to your baby through your milk
2. Hypoallergenic formulas are produced by using enzymes to break down milk proteins, such as casein or whey. Depending on the level of processing, products are classified as either partially or extensively hydrolyzed. Or they may also be called elemental formulas. Some hypoallergenic formulas aren't milk based, but instead contain amino acids. Along with extensively hydrolyzed products, amino-acid-based formulas are the least likely to cause an allergic reaction. In Lebanon we have Pepti-Junior (partially hydrolyzed) and Neocate (elemental).
3. Soy-based formulas are based on soy protein instead of milk ONLY IF your baby isn't allergic to soy as well!
