How much litters of milk should a 2 year old baby have per day?
May 15, 2013

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The recommended average daily intake of milk for a 2 year old toddler is 2 cups per day; one cup can be: 1 cup of milk or yogurt, around 45 grams of natural cheese, or 60 grams of processed cheese. You may want to switch to low-fat or non-fat milk as of this age as your child's growth no longer requires fat from milk, but please consult with your child's pediatrician before taking this step. Also, start using a sippy cup instead of bottle especially during the day (prolonged exposure of teeth to milk from bottle may cause dental caries).
Some toddlers and older children really like their milk and insist on drinking a lot more than that. If the child is receiving a healthy, well balanced diet and wants additional milk, it's OK. However, if he/she is eating poorly, you need to reduce his milk intake because milk is rich in calories, so the more he drinks the less his body is going to want to eat. A good rule of thumb is to only serve it at meals or snacks, so don't allow your child to wander around with his/her milk bottle. If he/she drinks milk he has to sit at the table. If he/she wants to wander around with a sippy cup, than it has to be water.
