Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Before jumping into starting medical treatment, hypertriglyceridemia, or an elevated level of triglycerides in the blood, is initially handled with lifestyle modifications, including weight loss, dietary changes, and exercise, especially when the triglycerides level is not so much elevated (a triglycerides level of 200 is still acceptably elevated). This is because drugs such as Lipathyl (fenofibrates) are started when these measures, when applied properly, prove ineffective in reducing the levels of triglycerides.
Another factor that needs to be taken into account is the results of the other lipid levels (including total cholesterol, HDL and LDL), any other risk factors for cardiovascular disease (such as a strong family history of lipid disease or heart disease at a young age), because if LDL is also elevated, this may lower the threshold to starting medical treatment especially if lifestyle modifications fail to improve triglycerides levels.
