Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
These results show low iron level (normal range 50-170 mcg/dL) and low ferritin levels; ferritin being the form of storage of iron in the body. Your magnesium and vitamin B12 levels are OK.
What you have is iron deficiency; you may have concomitant anemia as a result. You will need to do two additional tests:
- Complete blood count: to check if you actually have anemia
- Total iron binding capacity: a blood test to see if you have too much or too little iron in the blood. Iron circulates in the bloodstream attached to a protein called transferrin. This test helps determine how well that protein can carry iron in the blood.
After that, you will most likely require iron replacement therapy (oral tablets) for 3 months, after which you will need to repeat those tests to check how well you are responding to treatment.
You will also need to enhance your dietary intake of iron-rich foods, such as red meat, sardines, beans, broccoli, dried apricots etc.
