Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
When you do not eat enough food, your blood sugar level drops, and when this happens, your body seeks alternative sources of energy, by metabolizing proteins (especially if you're thin and your liver stocks if glycogen - the form of storage of sugar- are limited). Protein break down results in increasein the acidity of the blood and the formation of ketones; these compounds produce an unpleasant taste in the mouth, the same one you get when you fast. Moreover, the fact that you're not eating well, means that you're not chewing and thus the salivary glands are not triggered to secrete enough saliva. Saliva serves not only for digestion of food in the mouth, but also for clearing out bacteria. As such, with low salivary secretion, there will be overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth.
