Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Mouth-breathing at night, due to nose blockage, jaw problems, acid reflux or others, is a result of an entity known as obstructive sleep apnea (apnea: a- for no, pnea- for breathing), during which breathing occurs predominantly through the mouth instead of the nose, with frequent pauses/interruption of breathing for a few seconds. As a result, the mouth turns dry due to the airflow through it, so one wakes up feeling thirsty. A dry mouth, i.e. with not enough saliva washing it regularly, is a good medium for bacteria to grow, especially around the tonsils, hence the bad breath.
If you have nose allergy (allergic rhinitis) with frequent nasal blockage especially at night, large tonsils, temporomadibular joint disorder (TMD), acid reflux, obesity, or a combination of those, they explain your symptoms. Treating the underlying cause should eliminate this problem. Meanwhile, make sure you maintain proper oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, and gargling with an anti bacterial mouthwash regularly).
