Anal itching has many causes, one of them is pinworm infection. It causes itching around the anal area, difficulty sleeping and irritability.
Pinworm infection is spread by the fecal-oral route, that is by the transfer of pinworm eggs from the anus to someone’s mouth, either directly or indirectly through contaminated clothing, food, or other objects. The eggs become infective within a few hours after being deposited on the skin around the anus and can survive for 2 to 3 weeks on objects.
To diagnose pinworm infection, a “tape test” should be done as soon as you wake up before you wash, bathe, or go to the toilet . This “test” is done by firmly pressing the adhesive side of clear, transparent tape to the skin around the anus. The eggs stick to the tape and the tape can be placed on a slide and looked at under a microscope.
Treatment is with Albendazole (Zentel) or Mebendazole. Two doses of medication should be given with the second dose being given 2 weeks after the first dose
