Can someone have diabetes even if he's not going too much to the toilets?
Jul 26, 2013

Dr. Bassem Tanios Nephrology
Going too much to the toilets ( or polyuria ) and feeling thirsty can be both symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus, however polyuria occurs when blood glucose levels are too high, and Diabetes can be sometimes asymptomatic, that means it will cause no apparent sign of its presence.

Therefore current international guidelines recommend screening for Diabetes Mellitus, that means doing a blood test, usually a fasting blood glucose level or HbA1c test , to see whether Diabetes Mellitus is present or not, even if there are no symptoms.

Screening should be done for people of any age who are overweight ( Body mass index BMI>25 Kg/m2 and with one additional risk factor for developing diabetes ( Physical inactivity, first degree relative with diabetes, women who developed high sugar levels during pregnancy, women with polycystic ovary syndrome..)
If someone has none of the above risk factors, then screening should begin at age 45.

If the results of the tests are normal, then screening should be done every 3 years.
