Blood in stool and fever and diarhea... do I need to go to the ER?
Aug 17, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The blood is stools could be secondary to the infection itself (gastroenteritis) or due to a fissure in the anal area (from straining and frequent bowel movements). And because you are febrile with bloody stools, the germs that cause this usually require antibiotic treatment. In order to identify the causative agent (possibilities include Salmonella, Shigella, Entamoeba histolitica), a stool culture is necessary. I therefore advise you to visit an emergency room and receive adequate care.
