Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
So it looks like your daughter's weight has increased significantly (from 32 kg to 40 kg) between the ages of 8 and 9 years. She is currently on the 92nd percentile for weight and on the 60th percentile for height according to her age and gender. Her body mass index (BMI, calculated by dividing the weight in kg by the height to the power 2 in meters) is 23, close to an adult normal BMI. Now let's suppose we want to target dropping your daughter's weight to the 60th percentile so it would become more or less in concordance with her height, she should reach 35 kg. The weight loss process should be at a rate that does not exceed losing 0.5 kg per week. The main approach is by eliminating deep fried and fast foods, reducing highly processed sugars (avoid candy and bottled sweetened juices as much as possible, try to, for example, bake a cake at home using دبس الخروب) , and establishing and maintaining an organized meals schedule: 3 meals per day, 2 healthy snacks in between (fruits, carrots, home made popcorn with little oil and salt), drinking plenty of water. Of course routine exercise is essential: you can encourage your daughter by exercising together (doing aerobics, going to the gym) or you may want to sign her up for classes like swimming or dancing. Also encourage her to use the stairs instead of the elevator. A priceless tip: you should set the example of healthy lifestyle at home so that your daughter does not feel that shedding off those kilos is like a punishment.
