Alzheimer is a genetic disease. Is there any way to prevent it?
Sep 30, 2013

Dr. Georges Karam Psychiatry
It is true that Alzheimer’s is a genetic disease but you have to keep in mind that the most important risk factor for Alzheimer’s is age and NOT genetics. The older you become, the higher is your chance of having this disease. Genetics play an important role in early onset dementia (before the age of 60). What has been proven to increase your risk of Alzheimer’s are: depression, anxiety disorder, hypertension, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), diabetes, low educational level and sedentary life style. In order to protect yourself, you need to address the above risk factors. This means, if you have any of the diseases above, you need to treat them seriously. Also, you need to be mentally AND physically active. Watching TV is not a mental activity! As for physically, exercising 45min at least 3 times a day has been proven to lower your risk of Alzheimer’s.
