Unilateral (one-sided) leg swelling could be due to a number of conditions,
generally due to a local cause such as deep vein thrombosis( DVT, a condition in which a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins of the leg, thus hampering the blood circulation), venous insufficiency (which could be due to DVT or varicose veins), or lymphedema (an abnormal buildup of fluid that causes swelling, most often in the arms or legs. The condition develops when lymph vessels or lymph nodes are missing, impaired, damaged or removed). In order to determine the actual cause, I need to inquire about a few things: 1-how long have you been having these symptoms (<72 hrs or more?) If <72 hrs it's very likely a DVT. 2- Is it painful? blood vessel &nerve problems in the leg will produce pain; lymph vessel problems are painless. 3- Are u on any meds? meds for high blood pressure, steroids, anti-inflammatory drugs and some diabetes drugs may cause leg swelling. 4- do u have any diseases (heart, kidney, liver)? 5- do u suffer from breathing interruption at night (sleep apnea)? this leads to increase in blood pressure inside the lungs, resulting in leg swelling. This is particularly common if you are obese. 6- have you had any operation in the abdominal or pelvis area? sometimes some vessels are damaged during surgery, resulting in poor blood flow into the legs, so swelling occurs.

Annual Checkup
It is recommended that all individuals see a Family Doctor for a full medical examination annually. Adults should get their blood pressure checked (US Preventive Task Force), a flu vaccine (CDC) and more each year.
The American Dental Association recommends dental cleanings for adults at least twice annually. Some stains can only be removed by a professional cleaning.
It’s recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology that every adult between the ages of 18 and 80 does an eye examination at least once every two years.
It's recommended by the American Cancer Association that every adult between the age of 20 and 80 does an annual skin screening by a licensed dermatologist.
