My friend is Homophobic - what might be the reason behind it? how is it curable?
May 20, 2013

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Homophobia is a form of sexual prejudice &encompasses a range of negative attitudes &behaviors against homosexuals; it is not a disease. Factors (only correlations, not an established cause-effect) that promote such behavior include individuals with the following: male sex, older age, less well-educated, residing in geographic areas where negative attitudes represent the norm (like the Arab world), strict in religious practices &political views, display higher levels of psychological authoritarianism (that is, belief in absolute obedience or submission to one's own authority), are less sexually permissive, are more likely to believe that a homosexual orientation is freely chosen, are more supportive of traditional gender roles, are less likely to have had close personal friends or family members who are openly lesbian or gay.
To overcome such attitude, this requires widening one's horizons and being receptive to new ideas and perceptions, and accepting the others as they are. I believe that if your friend allows him/herself to get to know a homosexual person and realize they are normal human beings who very well contribute positively to his/her life and to the good of society, maybe that'd help this person view this topic from a different perspective. A discussion with a psychologist is of course of great benefit to clear out any hidden agenda.

The reasons may be multiple.
The consequence being that the person is homophobic .
You ask abou the treatment as if it was a "disease"; the first thing would be to have this person ready to accept that her attitude is wrong and to be willing to change, otherwise everything will be useless!
