Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Postpartum shedding, or hair fall after delivery, is an expected and to a certain extent normal phenomenon - not too much though, in which case it turns into postpartum effluvium and you notice patches of hair loss over your scalp.
During pregnancy, you're taking multivitamins, and the hormonal changes make your hair go into a dormant phase of growth, known as telogen. So your hair looks fuller and feels thicker. After delivery, this hair that did not fall off starts to shed all at once. This may persist for a good few months after delivery. The most prominent area is the zone just above the forehead. And the thicker you hair was during pregnancy, the more dramatic the hair shedding after your baby is born.
Try changing your hair cut or styling. And talk to your obstetrician - he/she may advise that you resume taking pregnancy multivitamins especially if you're breast feeding.
If you notice patches of hair loss over your scalp, more serious conditions should be ruled out, like postpartum hypothyroidism (poor thyroid gland function after delivery). Discuss this with your doctor.
