This is most likely due to staining from the mailing polish, especially if you're using rather dark shades of colors and not applying a protective layer prior to nail polish.
Another possibility that could make the problem worse is a fungal infection, whereby the nail not only becomes yellow in color, but also brittle, breaks easily, forms flakes that tear off in thin layers. This is quite common in the toe nails.
Regarding the nail polish issue, the most cosmetically bothersome yet the most logical and simple solution is to abandon nail polish until a new nail bed grows. You can help this by using products that will peel off the yellowish layer (found in the pharmacy, based on ethanoic acid). Scholl products for yellow nails are also good. You can wear closed shoes meanwhile. If you feel uncomfortable proceeding with this till the new nail bed grows, you can do this for at least 1-1.5 weeks, after that you can resume polishing your nails but you have to apply a protective layer prior to that. And opt for light colors - they stain less.
If however you have signs of a fungal infection, you need topical treatments (cream) or oral antifungal, depending on the extent of the infection. Seek medical advice from a dermatologist for this matter.

Annual Checkup
It is recommended that all individuals see a Family Doctor for a full medical examination annually. Adults should get their blood pressure checked (US Preventive Task Force), a flu vaccine (CDC) and more each year.
The American Dental Association recommends dental cleanings for adults at least twice annually. Some stains can only be removed by a professional cleaning.
It’s recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology that every adult between the ages of 18 and 80 does an eye examination at least once every two years.
It's recommended by the American Cancer Association that every adult between the age of 20 and 80 does an annual skin screening by a licensed dermatologist.
