Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
An elevated white blood cell count, or leukocytosis, may be the result of a viral illness (like a common cold or a flu) or allergic sensitization (if you have a background of allergy and experiencing allergic symptoms, and since it's the season, you may have a concomitant elevated white blood cell count). If you do not have any of the aforementioned conditions, we may think of what is known as diurnal variation of the white blood cell counts, being lower in the morning and higher in the afternoon. WBC counts also increase under stressful conditions, with physical activity, eating, pregnancy etc. Again keep in mind that to properly interpret a test result, this has to be done in the light of the clinical profile, as isolated result can often be un-interpretable.
