Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
When convulsions occur in an adult, an extensive investigation by a neurologist is required. Detailed history of the medical condition of the patient, the pattern of the convulsions (if they involve one part of the body or the entire body, if they are preceded by certain specific signs, followed by loss of consciousness etc.), family history of epilepsy/seizure disorders, any trauma to the head, chronic medications, any other associated symptoms especially related of the nervous system, in addition to a thorough examination of the nervous system, will be done in the clinic. Based upon the conclusions made, the doctor may ask for an electroencephalogram (EEG) which records the brain electrical activity (brain waves) to detect any abnormalities. The EEG may be done while the patient is awake, sleeping, or both. It may be done for a short time, or the patient may be admitted to the hospital for video monitoring and recording of seizure activity (convulsions), and to monitor if these convulsions are accompanied with abnormal brain electrical activity.
