Dr. Edward Riachy Pediatric Surgery
Most of the times after an appendix surgery for appendicitis, the patient can resume clear liquids and advance as tolerated to regular diet after 3 hours after surgery, once he is well awake and recovered from anesthesia.
However, if the surgeon found a lot of pus form a perforated appendix, or some other findings, or had to do extensive dissection, he may want to delay the feeding until bowel movements are back.
