How long does the treatment of anemia last? Should iron pills be taken on the short or long run?
Mar 23, 2013

Dr. Elie Salem Pediatrics
You should do a complete blood count test to assess your anemia in addition to iron, ferritin and total iron binding capacity. Then according to your results, if it is iron deficiency anemia, you should take iron for 3 months to treat your anemia and replenish your iron store. If your tests don't reveal iron deficiency, you should do a hemoglobin electrophoresis test to check whether you have Thalassemia as a cause of your anemia. In that case, you don't need any iron treatment.
