Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
You need to get examined by a physician and do stool tests to rule out an infectious process (stool analysis, culture, ova and parasites). If you were on an antibiotic course recently, this could be secondary to the antibiotic treatment, as antibiotics may inadvertently kill the normal (good) intestinal flora (bacteria that live in symbiosis inside the intestines and produce vitamin K and help in the digestive process). If this is the case, the diarrhea should resolve shortly after you stop the antibiotic; you may take probiotics to hasten recovery.
If none of the above explain your symptoms, further investigation will be required to rule out more complex conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (malfunction in the branch of the nervous system controlling the gut, causing constipation alternating with diarrhea, usually worse with stressful conditions, in addition to bloating, frequent abdominal pain usually relieved by passing flatus and/or bowel movement), food allergy (to gluten, the protein in wheat, or to lactose, the sugar in milk), or inflammatory bowel disease (an auto immune disease whereby the immune system attacks itself, with a resulting inflammation in the intestines associated with skin, joint, and oral manifestations).
