Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Orthostatic hypotension, or the sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing up, is quite common. What happens is that there is pooling of blood in the legs/feet so the heart doesn't have enough blood to pump enough. Normally when you stand up your blood pressure should increase (effect of special cells in the heart and neck vessels that cause increase in heart rate and narrowing of vessels in order to increase the blood pressure). This response is defective in people with orthostatic hypotension so your blood pressure drops instead of rising. To diagnose this condition, we measure blood pressure when lying down then when standing up (after 1 min of standing up): if the upper blood pressure drops by more than 10 the diagnosis is made.
To prevent this, don't rise up from a sitting/lying position too fast - take a few minutes. Also keep well hydrated (dehydration worsens the symptoms). If however your symptoms get worse, consult your dr to rule out serious underlying causes (heart problems, diabetes).
