Stomach noises, like rumbling, gurgling and growling, occur with normal digestion. Stomach growling can happen when you're hungry, but it can also happen after you eating or in between meals during food digestion.
When you're hungry, hormone-like substances are released by your gut to send signal to your brain, thus stimulating your desire to eat. A message is then sent back to your gut, leading to the release of acid and other digestive fluids, plus the muscles in your gut start to contract — which causes the sounds you hear.
Sometimes excessive stomach noise can be a symptom of an underlying gastrointestinal disorder, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). But in such cases, other signs and symptoms exist, such as bloating, cramping, diarrhea or flatulence (excess gas).
