Which breast implant is better? Silicone, Saline, or the "gummy bear" one? And which is more safe?
May 14, 2013

Dr. Salim Saab Otolaryngology (ENT)
What do you mean by better? (shape, consistency,...) As for safety, Saline is the safest breast implant. The "Gummy bear" implant has been approved recently by the FDA, but the long-term effects haven't been studied yet.

Breast implants vary in many characteristics in order to fit to each patient demand. Breast augmentation has become a customised, tailored surgery taking into account the tissue charcteristics of the patients and their expected results, to achieve the most predictible outcome.
Breast implants vary in their shape (round or anatomical= gummy bear), their envelope (smooth, microtextured, macrotextured), their filling (saline, silicone gel) their consistency (cohesive, soft) their volume and their projection.
All these variables are designed to achieve the result that is the closer to a natural augmentation, with quick recovery and long lasting result over time.
Silicone implants have been widely studied over the last 20 years, their safety has been totally approved, the rate of patients satisfaction is very high, the rate of complication is comparable to other type of implants. Capsular contracture wich is an overreaction of your body to implant is lower with silicone implants. Anatomical implants or gummy bear are used in selected cases to achieve a very natural augmentation without having a fullness of the decollete. They have also been studied thoroughly for the last 15 years with enough evidence of safety.
Saline implants are also very safe. But they have a risk of deflation over time, a rate of capsular contracture that is higher than silicone implants in comparative studies, and they have a risk of rippling in thin patients.
In conclusion, breast augmentation is a very rewarding surgery for the patients with a very high rate of satisfation. The results depends on all the process from the choice of implant to the type of surgery (incision, under muscle or gland etc) and to the post operative follow up.
There is no best implant, there is an optimal implant for each patient.

The safety of breast implants have been studied extensively over the past decade. They are proven safe as far as cancer and neuromuscular diseases are concerned. They are still associated with a certain risk of developing hardness or capsular contracture, which, in itself, is not dangerous, but can lead to additional surgery. Regarding the inal result, I do prefer silicone gel implants which give a better and more natural result.
