Sneezing and coughing are similar reactions that serve the same basic purpose for two different parts of the respiratory system. They're designed to keep this system as clear as possible, and to deal decisively and violently with irritations and obstructions.
Trying to understand the phenomena of sneezing and coughing will give the answer to your case and what is happening with you there:
A sneeze begins when the upper nasal mucosal lining is irritated by a cold virus or other irritant, tiny nerve endings in the nasal lining signal the sneeze center in a part of the lower brain system known as medulla, the brain signals muscles in the chest and throat to contract, the brain signals the eyes to shut and the palate to close, powered by contractions in the chest and throat ,the sneeze exists through the mouth clearing the nasal cavity.
To provoke a cough ,irritants stimulate nerves in the lungs promptingmucus secretionsand causing tiny air tubes to contract ,the lungs send signals through the vagus nerves to the medulla there is short intake of breath, then the brain directs the glottis to close, the chest muscle contracts, the glotiis reopen and the air with forecefully is expelled clearing the airways.
So the cause of what happening to you is that :
1- the same irritant that is stimulating a sneeze is stimulating a cough at the same time and you must check with doctor to figure out the irritant that is causing this and possibly you have to check for asthma even though you hadn't before you may have adult asthma without knowing that ,or any other infection you have as bronchitis or more serious problem.
2-when you are sneezing ,sneeze is irritating the bronchus and lungs to stimulate a cough reflex ,and from the above we knew that they have the same reflex center at the medulla ,so sometimes they are interfering with each other.
3-the vagus nerve is irritated by sneezing so a cough signal is sent.
BUT since the symptoms you are complaining are not only sneeze and a normal cough after but rather a strong cough then the first probability is set to be .
So from what have been explained ,check with your doctor to order some tests or images to check your respiratory system
