When will my 3 month old baby's scalp become fully developed? He has a side circular and the other is flat. He sleeps on 1 side only (circular one).

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The skull of a human being includes a number of fontanels, which are areas made up of cartilage that has not yet fully turned into bone (ossified).
The normal sequence of fontanel closure in humans is as follows:
1- posterior fontanel is most commonly closed at birth, but may also close by 2-3 months after birth, 2- sphenoidal fontanel, located at both dies of the forehead anteriorly, is the next to close around 6 months after birth
3- mastoid fontanel, located behind the ears, closes next from 6-18 months after birth
4- the anterior fontanel is usually the last to close, on average around the age of 18 months
In general, it is good to alternate the sides of the head on which the child sleeps on to avoid the development of flat areas in the skull. You may gently turn the head of your son to the opposite side after he has fallen asleep.
