What is arthritis and how is it diagnosed? Also, what is the treatment for arthristis?
Mar 18, 2013

Dr. Bernard Hojaili Rheumatology
There are multiple types but the major categories are two. The arthritis from inflammation (rheumatism) and the arthritis from aging and or trauma of the joint.
1- arthritis from inflammation (rheumatism): The cause is a dysfunction in the immune system making our joints a target for our immune cells. Instead of defending our body from microbes, they attack the joints and cause inflammation, pain, and damage
2- Arthritis from aging and trauma: as its name states, because of aging or trauma, the joint structures start to disintegrate and result in pain
Diagnosis is done by blood tests and blood tests as well as by the physical exam and history. The treatment depends on the type. There are at least 15 kind of arthritis and each one has a specific treatment

I would also like to add that imaging (x-rays) are very helpful as well to differentiate inflammatory arthritis from osteoarthritis or trauma related arthritis.
