Deanxit is classified as an anti-depressant medication. It is composed of two ingredients- flupentixol 0.5mg (or flupenthixol, an antipsychotic) and melitracen 10mg (a tricyclic antidepressant). When mixed together, the drugs work by maximizing the effect against illness.
This drug was produced in Denmark and distributed worldwide, however, its sales in Denmark itself is prohibited. Recently, it has gotten banned in the USA, the UK, Australia, Canada, Japan and Ireland. This is because of lack of proper testing of this drug prior to its marketing, and its potential serious neurological side effects
This drug is not intended for long-term treatment; it is only used only for a short term under the supervision of a specialist doctor for the following conditions:
• Depressive illness
• Anxiety or bipolar illness. Its second component, melitracen acts against bipolar illnesses.
• Psychogenic depression
• Menopausal depression, where nothing else works
• Long lasting myogenic headache
• Resistant migraines
• Certain gastrointestinal disturbances which have a neurological component.
The effect of Deanxit takes around 2 weeks to kick in. Initial phases may be troubling; one may get insomnia and other side effects. With time, you gradually get used to these effects.
The following side effects have been identified:
• Tachycardia or increase in the heart rate is observed in some individuals. One may feel palpitations in the chest.
• Fatigue
• Drowsiness
• Stomach upsets, vomiting sensations
• Problems in initiating sleep.
This medication is contraindicated in the following conditions:
• cardiac insufficiency.
• extreme restlessness or agitation.
• altered level of consciousness.
• severe depression that requires hospitalization
Precautions
The following precautions are advised while on Deanxit:
• Don’t stop taking the drug without informing your doctor, you will need his/her help in changing to other alternatives.
• Do not co-administer other psychoactive drug along with this medication as they possibly adversely interact with each other.
• No alcohol is allowed while you are taking this medicine.
• Care while driving or while handling any other machinery; extreme drowsiness with this medicine increases the risk of accidents
• If any side effects of the medication occur, or you get worsening of symptoms or suicidal thoughts, report to your doctor immediately.
This drug is habit forming (addictive) with significant withdrawal symptoms; stopping it must be done in a step-wise fashion under a doctor’s supervision. Some of the withdrawal symptoms include:
• Anxiety and panic feelings, restlessness
• Blurred vision
• Problems in balancing
• Difficulty in focusing at work
• Dizziness
• Constipation
• Fatigue
• Insomnia
• Increased headaches
• Hallucinations and disturbing illusions
• Depression gets worse
