Dark spots are caused by increased pigment in the skin produced from cells activated by sun exposure. When the pigment accumulates over time, these spots appear on the face, as well as the hands, neck and back. Although limiting sun exposure is the most effective way to avoid such spots

Stronger concentrations of hydroquinone are also available as prescriptions to bleach the spots further.
