Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The initial interventions in individuals with dyslipidemia (elevated blood lipids) is through lifestyle modifications, starting from weight loss and dietary reform, to smoking cessation, to regular exercise. All these should be attempted with perseverance and consistence prior to instituting any drug treatment, especially that your husband is young. Targeting a lean weight, following a diet that is low in trans- and saturated fats and carbohydrates but rich in proteins and omega 3 fatty acids (to lower LDL and increase HDL), exercising at least 5 days a week for a minimum of 30 minutes, and of course starting to reduce the number of cigarettes per day with an ultimate goal of quitting smoking all together constitute the plan of action for now.
