Is it true that the HPV can only be done if the girl is a virgin?
Jan 14, 2013

Dr. Karim Nawfal Obstetrics & Gynecology
Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a viral infection that in certain cases cause cervical cancer in the future.
HPV vaccines are now available and it is recommended for all girls (starting at age 9)
It is better to get the vaccine and become immune before starting sexual activity, so it is better to have the vaccine when the girl is still a virgin as it provides the best protection.
However there is still some protection acquired even if the patient is already sexually active so we do give the HPV vaccine sometimes even if the patient is not a virgin.
