Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The mere act of sitting, especially for long hours, is considered a risk factor for developing low back pain; this occurs because of the absence of motion in the spine causes stretching of the ligaments in the spine, which impairs fluids from reaching the vertebral discs (poor blood circulation), ultimately resulting in insufficient amount of nutrients reaching the discs.
In order to reduce those pains, you will need to change your sitting position, do stretching exercises, stand-up for a few minutes every like one hour, and keep your abdominal muscles stiff (this takes off some of the weight stress on your spine). You also need to choose a chair with a back and one that is dynamic (chairs that allow movement of the chair seat and back support independently).
Should the back pain persist, or start to radiate/extend to the thigh or leg, you should be examined by a physician to make sure there is no nerve irritation/inflammation.
