I had sex 3 years ago and I didn't do any blood tests for HIV. I did a thyroid test when I visited my doctor for another reason. Can a blood test show if I have an HIV infection?

Dr. Nehme Raad Urology
The baseline tests that are done in case of a sexually transmitted disease are the serology test for HIV, Hepatitis B and C and Syphilis (VDRL).
Those must be done at the time of exposure (to detect if you have any previous STDs) and 3 months after (to detect if there is any transmission).

It is wise to undergo tests for the most common sexually transmitted infections especially if sex was not safe. Consult your doctor to tell you what tests and what exactly those tests can tell.
