Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
Do you have any pain of the tongue or swelling associated with the red color ,
Glossitis is an inflammation of the tongue that causes it to swell in size, change into different shades of red, and develop a smooth appearance on the surface.

This condition can cause the papillae—the small bumps on the surface of the tongue—to disappear. Severe inflammations that result in swelling, redness, and pain, may change the way you eat or speak.

The most causes of your condition causing inflammation are :

>Allergic reactions to medications, food, and other potential irritants may aggravate the papillae and the muscle tissues of the tongue. Potential irritants include toothpaste and certain types of medications that treat hypertension.

SO watch what you eat and what medicines you are taking ,especially if this redness is caused after specific food or brushing

>There are obvious causes of red color change such as something you ate (strawberries or red-colored foods).
>Some acidic foods can cause temporary redness and discomfort.
>However, a red tongue can be a sign of an underlying medical condition.
>Some red color changes on the tongue (“strawberry tongue”) could be related to vitamin deficiency, Kawasaki disease, or a strep infection (scarlet fever).

Possible causes of red (ranging from pink to reddish-purple) tongue are :

>Folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiency
>Pellagra -a vitamin deficiency disease most frequently caused by a chronic lack of niacin

>Pernicious anemia a type of vitamin B12 anemia.

>Plummer-Vinson syndrome a condition that can occurs in people with long-term (chronic) iron deficiency anemia.

RISKS for tongue inflammation if you:

-receive an injury to the mouth
--wear braces or dentures that irritate your tongue
-have herpes
-have low iron
-eat spicy foods
-have dry mouth
-have an allergic reaction
-have an immune system health problem

Antihistamines can help relieve a swollen tongue caused by allergies. Avoid the food or drug that causes the tongue swelling and redness
Have a a physical exam by a doctor , to look closely at the tongue and to order some blood tests to know the cause and treat it with necessary .
