Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Menstruation occurs when the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus), after having grown thicker in preparation for possible egg fertilization, starts to shed off. This is accompanied by bleeding and sloughing off of endometrial tissue. Your body during this time of the month secretes anti coagulants (blood thinners) to facilitate the flow of blood out. During peak flow (the days where the menstrual flow is most abundant), the bleeding occurs at a fast rate that overwhelms your body, so the blood clots are not thinned out by the time they are thrown out. This is why you see those dark thick blood lumps. Afterwards, bleeding becomes lighter and more fluid.
