Does a healthy 3 months baby needs iron supplement daily
Feb 4, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Not yet - Iron supplementation is usually initiated around the age of 4-5 months, when the iron that she has accumulated from you when she was still in your womb starts to run out. The
recommendation is to give breastfed infants 1 mg/kg/day of liquid iron
supplement until solid foods, such as iron-fortified cereals, are introduced,
which is when your baby is about 5 months of age. For partially breastfed
infants, the iron recommendation remains the same as that for fully breastfed
infants if more than half of the daily feedings are from human milk and the
child is not receiving iron-containing complementary foods.

No need for iron supplement at 3 months except if the baby was born prematurely or with low birth weight. Mature babies who are breast fed  should have iron rich food ( meat , cereals with added iron )added to their diet starting at age 4-6 months. only if they are not eating enough iron rich meals then an iron supplement will be needed.Formulas in general are fortified with iron and introduction of solid food after 6 months of age will prevent anemia. If you are not giving your baby solids after age 4 months it is better to give him iron supplement till he starts eating enough iron rich meals.
