Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
This is most likely osteoarthritis, which the most common form of arthitis (joint inflammation). What happens is that there's breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of one or more joints. Cartilage is a substance made of proteins and acts like a cushion between bones (to minimize friction). This condition commonly affects the hands, feet, spine, and large weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees.
Ostearthrithis is classified as primary (it does not result from trauma or disease and is the result of natural aging of the joint. With aging, the water content of the cartilage increases, and the protein makeup of cartilage degenerates) or secondary (resulting from stress on the joint due to obesity, repetitive injury or surgery to the joint, and diseases like gout or diabetes).
Diagnosis requires imaging and arthroscopy (scope inserted into the joint for direct visualization +/- repairing of damage).
The mainstay of treatment is weight reduction and physical therapy + exercise, and pain control.
