Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
We could be looking at an entity known as Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome (APS). This disease is characterized by auto antibodies that target more than one organ, usually the thyroid gland, the pancreas (in which case you get diabetes), the intestines (thus precipitating celiac disease which is gluten - the protein in wheat- sensitivity or other forms of intestinal disease in which there's atrophy on the intestine with resulting poor food absorption and thus bloating, constipation or diarrhea ), the ovaries (causing menstrual irregularities or probably infertility), the liver (causing elevated liver enzymes), and the skin, in which case you get Alopecia (hair loss) or vitiligo (loss of skin pigmentation).
If this is indeed the case, then more tests need to bedone tocconfirm the diagnosi. The tests will ddepend on the organs that we wwould like to assess (so for eexampl, if we wwant to ccheck if you have pproblems in the oovarie, we sshould measure eestrogen LH FSH). A useful genetic ttest would be HLA-DR mmutation which is aassociated with APS.
