When calcium supplements are recommended to pregnancy woman, in which month? do they have any side effect.? And it is true that they may enlarge the head of the baby? Please advise
Apr 20, 2013

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The pregnant woman needs to have a total intake of Calcium of 1000 mg/day, from food plus supplements if needed. It's recommended to start early on but you can always start it as of the 2nd trimester. Calcium has been shown to reduce the risk of developing hypertension during pregnancy mainly in women who have low baseline levels. Consult your obstetrician concerning your diet to ensure that you have a well balanced diet. And don't forget iron and folic acid supplements as well.
