What is fibromyalgia & which doctor can treat it?
Aug 18, 2013

Dr. Jean Esso Anesthesiology
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of chronic widespread pain accompanied by weakness, fatigue, and sleep disturbances; the cause is UNKNOWN. It has nothing to do with arthritis; it does not cause joint damage or inflammation. People with fibromyalgia have “tender points” on the body. Tender points are specific places on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, and legs. These points hurt when pressure is put on them.
It is important that the patient's doctor is trained in treating fibromyalgia, as it is not an easy condition to treat. For best results the patient should be treated by a specialist (could be internist, psychiatrist or rheumatologist) and a physical therapist simultaneously. Patient compliance is crucial for good results.

Fibromyalgia is a disease entity that is characterised by multiple joints and muscle pains without having swelling, hotness or redness of the joints. Usually lab studies and Xrays are normal but the physical exam, when done by a doctor, will show certain areas in the body that are really tender. the entity is usually associated with stress or sleeping problem but the exact cause is still not very clear. a family physician or an internist can treat the entity. Antidepressants in small doses are sometimes given as well teaching some stress management techniques
