Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
Hijama is the Arabic name in traditional medicine for wet cupping, where blood is drawn by vacuum from a small skin incision for therapeutic purposes ,it is known as cupping therapy

Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine and thus it is like many alternative treatments, it has not been extensively studied. Researchers say that most cupping therapy studies have been small and poorly designed. More studies are needed to prove or disprove claims of health benefits.

On the other side ,it is thought to treat a variety of conditions , it is sometimes used beside acupuncture and medications to treat certain disease .

The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system (which makes it an excellent treatment for high blood pressure). Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite. For weight loss and cellulite treatments.

Oil is first applied to the skin, and then the cups are moved up and down the surrounding area.it is thought to removes harmful substances and toxins from the body to promote healing.

HOWEVER ,it is considered safe if done by trained health professionals but there is many considerations to know:

-it must be done in the rules of standard hygiene ,if done by untrained people some skin infections or other serious infective contagious diseases might be transmitted to the person such as hep B,C ,.aids ,...

-After the procedure, the site may be covered with an antibiotic ointment and bandage to prevent infection. The skin's appearance generally returns to normal within 10 day

-a medical history must be taken in consideration because certain diseases are affected negatively by hijama like cancer, pregnancy ,muscle spasms,...

- some site of diseases a cup of hijama must not be placed on otherwise bad effects like an ulcer or DVT,artery,...

-not relying on it as base in treatment but it is considered an additive treatment beside the basic treatment prescribed by a doctor .

-it can cause skin infections, burns ,bruises,...

-it is not a specialized therapy by it self to certain disease ,it may and may not affect

-it should and it should not be done routinely ,the person will decide about it BUT after a medical review with a trained specialist ,however ,usually people relying on it may make three times a year if they feel better and satisfied .

In summary ,hijama is an alternative medicine same as Chinese medicine acupuncture , it is not a treatment by itself but a helping procedure ,it should be done by a specialist and NO studies have been done on it yet many benefit on it ,it is a personal decision.
