Stretch marks usually are only a cosmetic problem. In rare instances, if they extend over large surface area, they may ulcerate or tear easily in an accident. If they first appear during adolescence, they are expected to become less visible over time, in which case treatment is generally not required. If however stretch marks are a cause of concern, then the following treatment options may be attempted, though they have not been proven to be effective:
