What are the side effects of prolonged use of fml eye drops?
Jan 11, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Fml eye drops are based on a kind of local steroid, Fluorometholone. With prolonged (over months) use of ophthalmic (eye) steroids, the main side effects that worry us are increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure or IOP) and an impairment in the function of the local immune system, leading to easily contracted local infection plus poor wound healing. Adverse reactions include, in decreasing order of frequency, elevation of intraocular pressure with possible development of glaucoma (severely increased IOP) and infrequent optic nerve damage,  cataract formation, and delayed wound healing.
Signs and symptoms of IOP are:
pain behind the eyes, sudden vision changes, severe headache
sudden eye irritation
blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights
Signs of eye infection are: redness and swelling, draining, or crusting of the sea
eyes
You are advised to follow up with your treating eye doctor.
