Excessive online game playing can have negative effect on your child for several reasons:
- Kids who spend so much time in front of the PC and playing online games are missing out on other activities such as playing with friends and they tend to spend so much time alone and this can be a form of social isolation.
- Spending so much time infront the computer playing games can limit your child’s physical activity and be a cause of obesity
- Studies have shown that kids who spend hours playing video games have a poor school performance compared to other kids .
- Also , research shows that if your child regularly plays games with plots based on violence and aggression is at risk for increased aggressive behavior
However, not all online games are bad. Some games give children the opportunity to practice problem-solving and logic skills. They increase fine motor and coordination. As a parent, just limit the game playing time and make sure your child isn’t playing a game that is violent and sending the wrong message.
Spending a lot of time on video games can be associated with attention problems in children, and may lead to depression, social phobias, lower school performance , sleep and eating disorders, obesity, and expose kids to violence depending on the games content.
This is why the AAP ( american academy of pediatrics) recommends that teens should engage with entertainment media for no more than one or two hours per day, and that should be high-quality content.
It is important for kids to spend time on outdoor play, reading, hobbies and using their imagination in free play.
