Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
This could be due to food poisoning or a viral illness. In most cases, it's self limited and all you need is to take anti emetics (drugs that prevent nausea and vomiting, like domperidone or odansetron), and oral rehydration solution for the first 24 hours. Afterwards, a bland diet based on starchy foods (steamed rice, boiled potatoes, and bananas which are rich in potassium) and Laban are recommended. You can advance to boiled chicken on day 3.
In small children, however, dehydration may ensue more easily than in adults, especially if the oral fluid replenishment is not sufficient. I this case, the child may require intravenous fluids in the emergency room.
In case anyone of you develops fever, you will need to contact a physician to rule out a more serious food poisoning that could require antibiotic treatment.
