The AMA just recognized obesity as a disease. What are the pros and cons of such a decision? Is it a step forward to improve people's health?

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
If you consider the morbidities associated with obesity, like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, categorizing obesity as a disease is a great preemptive measure. If you fight obesity you'll be fighting all its complications which constitute a huge burden on the health system worldwide.
The only downside I can think of is that obese people could be discriminated against in terms of insurance coverage or in the job market. Hopefully these collaterals will be addressed and dealt with properly.
