Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
It is not bad per se to take calcium supplements without concomitant intake of vitamin D supplements, this is a false notion. The truth behind it is that the body requires vitamin D to adequately and efficiently absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, the body will not be able to form enough of the hormone calcitriol (known as the “active vitamin D”). As a result there will be insufficient calcium absorption from the diet. In this situation, the body must take calcium from its stores in the skeleton, which weakens existing bone and prevents the formation of strong, new bone. But remember: you can get vitamin D in three ways: through the skin via sun exposure, from the diet, and from supplements. If indeed you have DOCUMENTED Vitamin D insufficiency (level below 40) or deficiency (level below 20) then you are definitely encouraged to take Vitamin d supplements.
