Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
I asked this question because oral thrush usually occurs in people with a weakened immune system, or those who use inhalers that contain steroids, which cause local weakness in the immune responses. In your case, the oral thrush is most likely the result of the use of augmentin (amoxicillin clavulanic acid). What happens is that while the antibiotic is actively killing bacteria, it allows fungi the opportunity to overgrow in the oral cavity, hence the oral thrush. Since your symptoms have not responded to one course of treatment with fluconazole, you may need a second treatment course of oral fluconazole plus anti fungal mouth gargle solution. I advise to reconsult your treating physician on the matter.
