Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
This is called postherpetic neuralgia, whigh is nerve pain due to damage caused by the varicella zoster virus. The neuralgia manifestsas pain and/or burning sensation and is limited to the zone of the skin thatis innervated by the affected nerve and it comes after the resolution of the herpes zoster infection. The neuralgia usually begins as the herpes zoster vesicles (the fluid filled skin rash) have driedand crusted and begun to heal, but it can begin in the absence of herpes zoster.
Treatment is with pain medication (analgesics) like ibuprofen, trampoline, gabapentin, and even anti depressants or seizure medication in severe cases. Topical application of lidocaine based creams (this is a local anesthetic. Example is Emla cream) can also be helpful.
