Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
This sounds like a possible meniscal tear. Meniscal tears are very common knee injuries. Athletes who play contact sports, are at a particular risk for meniscal tears. However, anyone at any age can tear a meniscus.
The knee joint is composed of 3 bones: thighbone (femur), shinbone (tibia), and kneecap (patella).
The menisci (medial and lateral) are wedge-shaped pieces of cartilage that function as "shock absorbers" between the thighbone and shin bone and help stabilize the knee joint. These are called meniscus.
Sports-related meniscal tears often occur along with other knee injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament tears.
Sudden meniscal tears often happen during sports. Players may squat and twist the knee, causing a tear. Direct contact may also be responsible.
When the meniscus is torn, a "pop" is felt, even heard sometimes. Over 2 to 3 days, the knee will grows more stiff and swollen.
The most common symptoms of meniscal tear are:
Pain, Stiffness and swelling, Catching or locking of your knee, The sensation of your knee "giving way", You are not able to move your knee through its full range of motion
For diagnosis to be made, physical exam using special maneuvers should be performed by a physician.
Treatment depends on the findings on exam. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation are essential. Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as well. More specific treatment depends on the specific diagnosis.
