My husband had a mini bypass surgery to lose weight. Are there any side effects?
Jul 30, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Like the classic gastric bypass surgery, the mini bypass surgery has the following side effects:
Wound infections
Stricture of the stoma (narrowing)
Marginal ulcers
Internal hernia
Ischemia (inadequate blood supply)
Long-term micronutrient deficiencies (eg, vitamin B12, folate)
Of note, the mini bypass actually bypasses a longer segment of the intestines, thus the vitamin deficiency may be more serious. In addition, the liver enzymes and bile, which in mini bypass are not diverted away from the stomach, may cause reflux and pain due to the reflux, and this is difficult to treat/control.
